About Virginia potato prices
Virginia's potatoes are covered by USDA's Onley market news office and come from the Eastern Shore, the peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic. It is a round-potato fresh-crop district, red, white and yellow in close to even shares on this site, and it has never quoted a russet.
Packing here runs mostly to 50 lb sacks with 2,000 lb bulk totes behind them, a foodservice-and-repack profile rather than the retail-carton mix seen further south in Florida. Virginia sits in the middle of the Eastern Seaboard's round-potato rotation, picking up after Florida and North Carolina finish their runs and handing off to Delaware and New York as the season moves north, so a Virginia quote is a mid-calendar read on the fresh round-potato trade rather than a start- or end-of-season one.
